Informations
Roofing felt is a material that is often used for waterproofing roofs. It is a bituminous layer that is applied to roof surfaces to protect them from water and the elements. Roofing felt consists mainly of a carrier material coated with bitumen, a sticky, tar-like substance. Today, cardboard is no longer used in bitumen sheets. Roofing felt is usually laid in strips and attached to the roof with a special adhesive compound or by heating. Specialized recycling companies process the roofing felt so that it can then be reused, for example, for new construction site materials or as a component of road surfaces.
Instructions for the disposal
In the environment, roofing felt remains very stable and can last for many years without degrading. In addition, roofing felt often contains pollutants such as tar or various additives that can cause environmental damage if disposed of improperly.
Hazard classes
As a rule, roofing felt does not fall under the dangerous goods classes as long as it is not contaminated with particularly hazardous substances such as asbestos. Normal roofing felt containing bitumen is considered ordinary waste that can be disposed of according to the regulations for construction and demolition waste. However, if the roofing felt contains hazardous substances such as asbestos, which can be the case with very old roofing materials, special disposal regulations apply. In such cases, the roofing felt is classified as hazardous waste and must be treated by a specialized waste management company. These companies have the necessary permits and protective measures to handle hazardous waste.
