Informations

Windows have many important functions: they allow daylight into the room, allow ventilation and at the same time provide a barrier against cold, heat, noise and weather influences. Modern windows often consist of several components: the window frame can be made of wood, plastic or aluminum. It provides stability and anchors the window in the wall. When it comes to glazing, windows usually have one or more glass surfaces, with modern windows often double or triple glazed to improve thermal insulation. The rubber seals ensure that the window is airtight and watertight. The fittings allow the window to be opened, closed and tilted.

Instructions for the disposal

Windows are made of different materials and these must be treated separately when disposed of:

  • The window glass is not the same as bottle glass and must not be disposed of in the waste glass container. It must be taken to a recycling center that treats window glass separately. There are special companies that recycle window glass.
  • Wooden window frames can often be shredded and used as fuel or for reuse in construction, as long as they are not treated with harmful substances. Plastic frames can be recycled if they are separated by type. Aluminium frames are often recycled in metal recycling, as aluminium is a valuable raw material.
  • Small parts such as seals and fittings should be disposed of by type. Metals from the fittings can be recycled, while rubber seals often need to be treated as residual waste.

Hazard classes

As a rule, windows do not fall under the dangerous goods classes as long as they are conventional materials such as glass, wood, plastic or aluminum. These materials are not dangerous and can be disposed of relatively easily. However, there are exceptions for old windows that may have been treated with hazardous substances. For example, asbestos or lead-based paints may occur in older window frames or seals. In such cases, special disposal regulations apply, and these windows must not be disposed of under any circumstances. They fall under the category of hazardous waste and must be disposed of by specialised companies that have the necessary protective measures and permits.
